Medication can be a powerful intervention in the treatment of psychiatric disorders, but it is one form of treatment. Successful treatment involves the integration of all the interventions to provide the most effective treatment for the individual.
The decision to use medication is an important and sensitive subject for many patients and families. Dr. Moreland involves the family (and when appropriate, the child, teen, or adult patient) in the decision making process and helps them assess the benefits and potential risks of medication and the current situation. Medication is prescribed in the context of a therapeutic relationship and integrated with the other forms of treatment and services. Knowing when not to prescribe is as important as knowing when to prescribe.
